Two Cobb Cadets Accepted to Military Academies
KENNESAW, Ga. - As the school year wraps up, high school seniors are faced with making tough decisions about college. Two cadets from the Cobb County Composite Squadron of the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, Civil Air Patrol, have decided to serve their country as military officers. Cadet Senior Master Sergeant Anna Fournaris plans to attend the United States Air Force Academy and Cadet Major Malachi Wright plans to attend the United States Military Academy, better known as West Point.
C/Maj. Wright has been in the program for nearly four years, learning leadership, emergency services, and aerospace education, and now serves as the unit’s Cadet Commander. In this role, he assists adult leaders in managing a corps of fifty-one cadets, one of the largest in the state. He’s also one of the highest-ranking cadets in the unit. In the rank of Cadet Major, he’s only two steps away from the rank of Cadet Colonel, the highest grade in the program.
Cadet Fournaris has been in the program for nearly a year and now serves as the commander of the unit’s alpha flight. In this role, she works with C/Maj. Wright to teach young men and women in our community about leadership, military drill, history, and more. Both have received the “Cadet of the Year award” since joining the program.
Civil Air Patrol, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’sTotal Force. In this role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 aircraft, performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. CAP’s 63,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. In addition, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace/STEM education, and its members serve as mentors to over 26,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
