Blackhawk helicopters arrive from the 106th Aviation Regiment of the Georgia Army National Guard.Encampment is structured around many values, from respect to excellence in all we do, and, perhaps most importantly, teamwork. All the cadets learned about teamwork throughout the week, from team building exercises, to lessons given to them by their superiors, and learning how a team forms and is created in their Encampment Training Guides (ETG).

Teamwork was a crucial part of day 5’s activity, according to Blackhawk helicopter pilot Chief Warrant Officer 2 Elliott Lewis of the 1st Battalion, 106th Aviation Regiment.

“Teamwork for me means to build personal relationships with my teammates,” he said. “In aviation, it probably means something different than it does in other military capacities because everyone in the aircraft is just as important and as responsible for that aircraft and the safety of those onboard as any other member. So whether you are in the front seat, back seat, left seat, it doesn’t matter. Everyone is responsible for that aircraft and everyone inside of it. So, teamwork means building those relationships and fostering those relationships with those around you because you are all an equal part of the team.” Cadets at the 2023 Georgia Wing Encampment experience the thrill of helicopter flight thanks to the 106th Aviation Regiment of the Georgia Army National Guard.

For Cadet Airman Keegan Belanger from Dallas, Georgia, this was his first time flying in a Blackhawk. “It was nothing like I have experienced before,” he said.

Cadet Airman Aidan Allenberg from Cobb County said encampment wasn’t just the first time he’s ever ridden in a helicopter, it’s the first he’s ever flown period. Prior to the Blackhawk flight, Allenberg said he was very excited for the opportunity so we caught up with him after his flight to see how it went.

“It was so fun getting to turn on our side in the Blackhawk and getting to see the water in Lake Lanier,” he said. "It was the best experience I’ve ever had.”

Cadets return from their Blackhawk flights with smiles as wide as the helicopter itself.
